The Most Common Kinds of Car Accidents in Florida

Joshua Patchell and Brittany McLeod are dead following a one-vehicle car accident in North Key Largo in February. Patchell, 29, was in the driver’s seat of a 2005 GMC truck when he took a sharp curve on Route 905. According to reports, he swerved onto the shoulder of the road, overcorrected, found himself in the northbound lane and then overcorrected once again, finding himself on the shoulder again. The vehicle then became airborne and eventually hit a tree. Both driver and passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.

This is one of the more common types of fatal accidents here in Florida. Accidents where cars flip over tend to have the largest number of fatalities. Some other common types of accidents in the state are:

  • Rear impact accidents. These types of accidents occur when one vehicle is following another vehicle too closely — tailgating — or when a vehicle stops suddenly, causing the vehicle(s) behind it to hit them.
  • Head-on collisions. These kinds of accidents most commonly occur when a car drifts over into the opposite direction’s traffic lane. Many of these accidents are attributed to drunk driving, distracted driving or falling asleep at the wheel.
  • T-Bone crashes. Also called side impact accidents, these accidents happen when a vehicle hits your car while you are crossing an intersection. They are most commonly caused by drivers ignoring traffic lights or stop signs.
