Who are the Most at Risk to be Hit by a Car While Trying to Cross the Road in Florida?

The Miami Herald reported on May 16, 2013 that a couple was killed as they were crossing State Road 7 at Northwest Eighth Street in Margate. The 63-year-old man and his 49-year-old girlfriend were hit by a Toyota Sienna whose driver tearfully claimed to have not seen them. Neighbors blamed the city, stating that these are not the first pedestrians to be struck on State Road 7. They claim the busy road is dangerous to cross because of the absence of a nearby stop light.

Children and seniors are the pedestrians most at risk of being struck by a motor vehicle in Florida.

Pedestrian accidents often cause critical injuries or death. Florida is one of the three states with the most pedestrian fatalities according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report.

The NHTSA also reported that the elderly and children are the most likely to victims of a fatal pedestrian accident. Seniors may need more time to cross the street than the traffic lights are timed for. Children are not always visible to a driver, particularly a driver of a taller vehicle, like a pickup truck or SUV. The elderly and children are also more susceptible to be critically injured when struck by a car or truck.

Florida has many highways that are dangerous for pedestrians to cross

Many areas of Florida have seen a tremendous increase in population, leading to an abundance of traffic-laden multi-lane highways difficult to cross. Factors which can contribute to causing serious pedestrian accidents include:

  • Reckless driving — Drivers have a duty to pay careful attention to the conditions around them.
  • Driving while under the influence — Drivers impaired by drugs and alcohol are often the cause of deadly pedestrian accidents.
  • Crossing without the right of way — Pedestrians should also be careful to obey the traffic laws.
  • Poorly designed or dangerous roadways — The city needs to take into account the age of the residents and the traffic patterns in the area who may not make it to the other side in the typical allotted time.
